When I said "historically", I wanted to say as close as it could be, according to fuel tank capacity of the planes.
Fuel tank capacity is a poor factoring element when determining how long a game should last. Even if a plane went into combat with only 1 gallon of fuel in his tank, that pilot would still have more than enough fuel to fight the 1 to 20 minute brief combat that Blue Max simulates.
Fuel was only put in the game to limit the number of game turns played. Even the author of the game realized that this offset a plane's play ballance since he based fuel factors off the actual size of a fuel tank. But if we are going to do that, than there should be a greater chance for planes that have larger fuel tanks to explosed and we should take some of their maneuvers away because of the added weight of a full fuel tank. This is one of reasons why Fokker aircraft had slightly smaller fuel tanks, to improve combat maneuverability even if that means that patrol time was reduced from 6 hours to 5 hours. For that, some aircraft get raked in Blue Max. |
