I don't think I've played a wargame with such big hexes and counters.
I mean, other air-combat wargames look at Blue Max and get serious hex/counter envy!
My 2 cents: Blue Max (which I absolutely love, do not misunderstood me) is more a board game then a real wargame...
I agree. Blue Max is just a simple, easy, and very fun game to play. It started out as a board game, but works great with model planes on stands. In fact, works better with models on adjustable sand than with counters. But Blue Max is just a very fun game that captures the flavor of the topic without bogging down with detail. It completely meets the KISS theory (Keep It Simple & Straightforward). I play Blue Max more than any other air combat game for this reason. I use to play those complex air games as well, but it dawned on me one day that since every turn is just a fraction of time and you have all this time to make your moves, everyone was an expert pilot. Then computer technology improved and flight sims got really good, that just made it even more clear to me that the more complex air combat games were just a waste of time. If I want to play a detailed air combat game, I will play some of the newest computer flight sims. If I want to play a really fun game (that is simple, fast, and enjoyable) and socialize and joke around with my gaming buddies, Blue Max is the way to go... hands down.
