| Message text Dealing with the very first item in this thread, I too am noticing a lot of critical hits, especially in odd situations.
The main time I get "fabric tears" or "engine damage" is when someone is shooting at me on table 1 or 2 and just barely gets a hit.
So I'm flying a plane with 1 or 2 wing/engine boxes checked off and my performance is degraded, while at other times I have 1/4 of an airplane left and do speeds and maneuvers just fine.
We'll skip over the "learn to fly" crap.
I found the airplane discussions--especially involving the original designer-- very interesting. I had read elsewhere the "Camel at 15,000 feet" explanation-- and have to side with the opinion that asks, "what are we doing fighting ONLY at 15K.
Yes, I know, the original BM had everyone on the same altitude (fine with me) but the choice of making that magic spot at 15K feet is not something I've ever understood. With a few exceptions, I think most of the planes flying that high were looking to have a position advantage and dive on their enemy. (And please don't bother to correct me-- I know some planes could fly at 20k-- for awhile-- but could not really maneuver up there... and that the Germans had some 2 seaters going even higher. I said "most planes.")
10K feet would have seemed a much more likely choice-- but that is a decision made long ago. An unfortunate decision, since it makes certain planes "look bad." As i recall from my reference books (and I have the same ones cited above), the Camel was the most-produced fighter of the war. But in Blue Max, it is one of the crummier overall planes.
One disagreement-- that the Pfalz should share the Alb DV chart. Nope-- It was a slow puppy. Maneuverable, sturdy, and other nice things, but much slower than the DV.
The next Wings of War rendition will have the Pfalz D3 and Alb. D3 share maneuver decks (the Pfalz will be able to take more damage). Maybe one can disagree with that-- I'm not sure. I have heard the 'snap roll left" thing from several sources but always secondary, so I really don't know.
But it's nice to see a historical discussion here-- with mostly good exchange if ideas and not much sappy cuteness. |
