I agree with Steve. Any game I play I play to win, I will have fun win or loose, but winning is far more gratifying. When I'm a liability to my side I will always leave.
scotireb puts playing to win as the standard, and I agree. In the single games, only one player of the 2 to 16+ players can be the winner, and that is determined by points. In those games I almost always stay on until I am shot down. You don't get any points when you are off the board. If you find my point average, you will see some of the effect of staying on the board.
My point average is dropping. I am now playing leagues (though at the moment I don't have 5 finished games in the last month so I had to start some single games). In league, you get the most league points by a good kill/survive ratio, so you have to get off of the board with honor, or survive on board to the end.
In a campaign situation, it would depend on the specific rules. Exiting without "honor" might allow your pilot to survive, but the campaign rules might have you demoted for cowardice. Honor gets chatted up here from time to time, but this is a game, and should be played to the rules, for victory.
The above having been said... Since this site does track statistics, I am sure that many play for different long term goals. If you want a high win/loss ratio, and a lot of games, play 2 player matches. If you want a lot of points, play in bigger games where there are more points to be had, and stay on the board. If you want a high kill/dead ratio, you have to get your plane off the board when you are in danger.
