| | Message text Your points one this issue and your other post regarding turning without sails have some merit from an historical context, but this is one of those many areas involving wargames in which playability (or in case of the online version, the complexity of programming) trumps historical accuracy.
I don't know if you have a copy of the original rules, but there are advanced rules that take into account the diminishing field of fire of a broadside on the margins. There are also advanced rules for changing winds, anchoring, different types of ammunition, critical hits, repair of damage, etc., that all try to inject increasing levels of historical conditions. However, at some point the mental bookkeeping required begins to interfere with the enjoyment of the game. And after all, it is just a game.
Perhaps some day additional advanced rules will be added to the mix. Until then, I think it is possible to recognize the boundary between realism and playability and still enjoy the game.
