in air to air combat it is ONLY the kill that counts
how much damage you did...how many times you got into position...how many times you shot at the target...all count for nothing if you didnt get the kill
the more skill your pilot has...the better his chance of getting the kill...but luck has always played a role in combat and sometimes no matter how good you are you still lose cause your luck has run out
