I am lucky enough to witness and participate the 3 stage of hurbert quoted and here is some footnot plus my own obseravtion.
Actually from yr1 to yr5 (03-08), There is some small campaign organised by me and die-hard players but it is not very common. Participants response is very good and Coordinator are quite happy to do so.
On the map size, I prefere small (8x10) and (10x10) as it involves more dogfight. I like 8x8 most for dancer type plane (triplane) but it is bad for runner's type plane like Nieuport 28.
I rarely join games on 17x12 as Allies always use to their advantages for more fuel and hunt for German easy prey.
After the introduction of League, organizers like me find it difficult to recruit individual to join games. So we gradually stop organizing games.
2) After those period ended there were another era of competitions (some were team/squadron bases) where someone created web pages to track the progress. Map size were 10x8 as well and usually involve no more than 3 on each side.
Yap, this period is around 6 yrs ago and I am not that active. However I have organized Tomkey with a group of 10-12 pilots so that we held inter-squad campaign regularly, I miss those good old days.
3) After that came Kit (GraysGhost) squadron campaign. Slow play creeps in and people lost interest. Kit's campaign was based on different war periods hence people cannot just go on to next set of games without the first sets being done so experience/casualties can be calculated. It was not easy to have games finished follow by waiting period of 4 weeks. And we have to hunt p.eople down again. Attendance were bad enough for Kit's campaign that anonymous clones had to be used, something that was not necessary in the old days.
Kit's cmpaign mode is the best time of the site I would say. Inter-Squad/ Intra-Squad league competition is common. And team leader exchange info, try around manually managed campaign mode.
But the admin involved is really demanding.
The only games that I created these days are over in WSIM beta. For BM and regular WSIM, I join whatever games I like that in the pending list. As for leagues I don't usually join that early as I try hard to avoid unknown new players who have a great tendency to become automovers especially if they join way too many leagues. Many of them don't realize 5 leagues of the larger types will mean over 100 games. There were mechanisms in the old Nick days to prevent that but I think they stopped working sometime ago.
The league system is both a good and bad design. The mulitiple game play ensure fairness. However joining a league means that you promise game sets from 9 to 25. Which it means if you join 2 league you will need to login everyday to ensure league flow.
The commitment is not easy and new users find there is a sharp learning curve from leisure play to league.
Also the league system is the LAST major site system development, WS&IM is different as it is a seperate project. Later we have Gonzaga but it is also a seperate project too. Nick, the site creator found its very time consuming for admin work and two years ago sell the site to Jim. And then the site keep as is up to now.
I am now discussing with the Management team about the development of the site, hope in 1/2 weeks time we can have some good news for you all.
Cheers
