WWI planes did have fuel guages.

I regularly check my fuel status as a part of every turn, just like I check my damage and the previous moves of potential targets (or those targeting me). It is simply a part of my routine for every turn.

I have to admit, though, that I have sometimes gotten caught up in the thrill of the chase and found myself on the wrong side of the board with too little fuel to make it back to my side...
