Then it would be a choice, go for the kill - risky as I know I will run out of fuel, or turn back now and let him escape but get home safe(ish).
That would simulate a GPS that computes your fuel expected consumption...
...they didn't even have fuel gauges at all!
For me, I developed am instinct that makes me look at fuel when I'm near red zone. Not infallible, but works most of time. I suggest you start doing that.

I try but my instinct is to look at the fuel gauge just at the point when I have about 2 fuel left - pretty much regardless of where on the map I am. I'm trying to train it - but a warning saying you have 10 or less fuel remaining (you can hear the engine sputtering a bit) would improve my play - and presumably the play of some of my opponents, so I think it might be good for the game - even if not accurate to the period.
