It would make it harder to make a silly mistake
Then it would be a choice, go for the kill - risky as I know I will run out of fuel, or turn back now and let him escape but get home safe(ish).

it would be a nice addition but, in reality you would be so concerned in fighting (avoiding bullets or trying to score hits) that you would not always remember to check how much fuel is left.
