New releases are discussed from time to time and I was wondering what everyone's favorite war movie is. Focusing mainly on the 20th century I always enjoy "The Great Escape", "A Bridge Too Far", "Where eagles Dare".
I also enjoyed a fairly recent release called "Letters From Iwo Jima" which I thought was far better than "Flags of Our Fathers".
I hate this type of threads since you have to translate the movie titles, or you have to report movie that could have not been offered on the international market.
Of this second type there are two Italian war movie:
1) "El Alamein - La linea del Fuoco" (El Alamein - The line of fire), an Italian film of 2002 on the El Alamein battle seen from the Italian soldier point of view.
2) Rossellini's 1942 film "Un Pilota Ritorna" (A Pilot cames back), provided that it is a movie made during the war, is a nice one too.
Then we arrive to the movies with the translated title. A typical example of the differences is the John Wayne's "
Rio Bravo" that in Italian is "
Un dollaro d'onore" (=One dollar of Honor) that I found to be much better. At this point, among the best war movies there are:
1) "Duello sull'Atlantico/The Enemy Below": US De against German U-Boat in SOuth Atlantic.
2) "Behind Enemy Lines" recent on the Balcan war.
3) "Dark Blue World" about Czechoslovakian pilots who served in RAF during World War II. The nice aspect of this movie is that it has been made with unused footage of the 1969's "Battle of Britain" and that it appeared in the same period of the Hollywood's "Well made crap" on Pearl Harbor attack.
Always on movies there are those movie of which you never remember the title. Typical example of this category is the "
The Pink Submarine".
