Dear pilots,
Should it be revised ?
What if we considered the kill difference (or rather, the death difference, since a plane can die due to fire) only, in order to discriminate between winner and looser? It could be a way to even up the odds when a team is initially outnumbered. If the kill difference is zero, the match is a draw. The rationale is that if you are outnumbered, you are most likely dead meat, so if you manage to bring down an enemy before going down it is still an achievement.
The points could be awarded as in the squadron league, with 3 to each player of a winning team, 0 to the losers, and 1 in case of draw. We could also keep the point awarded for every downed plane (both positive for the killer and negative for the killed).
A related issue. On one occasion (cfr http://www.youplay.it/play/bm_GameMove.asp?GameID=316461 ) I found myself vastly outnumbered (3 to 1) since all my squad mates were shot down earlier. Having a fast plane I managed to fly on a circuit that allowed me to avoid my enemies, waiting to run out of fuel in order to 'retire honourably'. I suppose they must have been disappointed by my 'cowardly' behaviour. However, it could be possible to introduce a rule (I have no clue about its feasibility, I am only proposing) stating that whenever a team is reduced to 50% or less of its original strength and outnumbered, any retreat made by a survivor would be considered honourable and not counted for the purpose of the match score. For example, on a 5 player match, team A has 3 elements while team B has 2. If each team loses a single fighter, the survivor of B could retreat honourably since she would find herself outnumbered (2 to 1) and her team would have lost 50% of its strength.
Hope this helps.
Have fun,
Wilco
