What I like about comparing this to war, is that sometimes you become an Ace before you die. I have yet to see anyone get 40 kills before going down, let alone 80, in Blue Max. We are not as good at this as some of them were at the real thing.
Not only that, but games tend to be much deadlier than reality. For instance, I play a B-17 game. (World War II) Typical squadron losses are running about 20% *per mission*. Which is significantly more than even the bloodiest exceptional real life missions, like Schweinfurt.
It would be pretty boring to play a combat game where only 1 in 10 was killed or injured. If you read about the Sioux Indian battles it was closer to 1 in 20 or less, if I remember correctly.
i think this is the attitude i am talking about
its really pretty sickening to me to hear about how boring it is to only suffer 10% casualties...any real general would probably sell his soul to be assured of only suffering 10% casualties
think for just a minute about what is going on...
when that biplance goes down in flames...imagine the pilot and/or observer...the long minutes of terror as they plummet from the sky to certain death...the agony of being burned alive...now...imagine for just a minute that it was you and see if you can so calmly accept the boredom level
when we play wargames we are playing games and as such we indulge in a bit of fantasy...but i think we do a GREAT diservice to those who fought in REAL wars when we forget that we fight not just to win...but also to survive
