i just got shot down by a tail hit in a situation where a tail hit is NOT possible to obtain
the observer in the Halberstadt fired into the FRONT hex of my aircraft and scored a RED tail hit... after looking at the rules carefully...observers do not recieve any special consideration when firing at targets from directly in front or directly in the back...and further that tail hits are converted to engine hits
in this particular case it makes a significant difference as it is a campaign game AND also the difference between being shot down and NOT being shot down...my engine is in pristine condition
Having been the surprised victim in a similar situation myself, I must say that I agree with you in a couple of ways-it doesn't really fit with the rules as written and it just doesn't seem right. In another respect though, I can see a justification for it. The shot the observer took at you was considered a deflection shot. Apparently, the game's program reassigns Engine/Tail damage only on non-deflection shots. So, unless it's a non-deflection shot, the observer can hit any part of the target. For what it's worth, the same logic is applied to forward firing guns also, so at least it is consistant. I'm not sure that it is technically a "bug", since it seems to be intentional, but probably more of a compromise of the written rules in order to simplify the programming for observer firing. Still, when you don't know about it (because it is different from the boardgame rules), it sucks to find out the hard way. Maybe someday the skymasters can insert a caveat in the YouPlay versions of the rules to warn players of this (and other) differences.
But now that you know about this nasty aspect of two-seaters, I'm sure you will be a little more wary around them in the future! I know I was and still am. Anyway, good luck with your other campaign games! Allies Rule!! |
