Blue Max Game 250786, Turn 27
i just got shot down by a tail hit in a situation where a tail hit is NOT possible to obtain
the observer in the Halberstadt fired into the FRONT hex of my aircraft and scored a RED tail hit...
after looking at the rules carefully...observers do not recieve any special consideration when firing at targets from directly in front or directly in the back...and further that tail hits are converted to engine hits
in this particular case it makes a significant difference as it is a campaign game AND also the difference between being shot down and NOT being shot down...my engine is in pristine condition
It seems to only apply if you are directly behind the 2 seater, otherwise you can get hit anywhere.
You get the deflection when firing from the 2 seater unless they are firing directly out of the tail hex. Your position would then come into effect for converting tails to engines. When you are firing at an angle at a tailgunner they are assumed to have raked your plane as they went by you, making it possible to hit anywhere on your plane, regardless of final position. I hate that rule. When we played the actual board game we always went by final plane position. Then again the tail gunner didn't have to count deflection penalty in either.
