Bill, I believe that the WWI airplane game using miniatures is "Wings of War." You should train your son up on "WS&IM" and bring him along to the WBC next year! I am working on my son who is 13, and I may bring him along next year (may depend on grades...) There were 3 young teens who joined us in the WS&IM tournament in Lancaster this year, it was fun watching the next generation earn their Midshipman's berths!

The game was probably "Dawn Patrol." I've heard participants claim that it is the only board game to be run at GenCon every year since the gathering began in 1968. I've have a recently acquired copy on the shelf, but I haven't found time to actually play it. It appears to operate much like Blue Max.
You can find out more about "Dawn Patrol" and the Flight in the Skies Society at http://www.dawnpatrol.org
