Okay, I think I see the problem. I thought it was the ship being fired upon that need a ship of equal or higher class within 10 hexes. It is the firing ship that is being used for comparison. Sorry for the mix up there.
So, maybe Scotireb will reply since he says he has seen it.
The rule probably confuses more people than any other rule. But, it was in the board game as well.
OK guys, can we let some realism in here. OMG!!! did he say realism. Thats blasphemy. Can we just let the occasional f-up go and quit trying to plan our games around the fact that a crew should act the same way every time in the same situation. They didn't. Case in point the Santa Ana at Trafalgar hung on thru most of the battle while getting its teeth kicked in. Anybody remember the Bonhomme Richard against the Serapis? It adds flavor and doubt to a battle. Or do we play for predictability? I don't. But thats just me whos been playing this game since 1974. Play on gentlemen.(and occasional ladies I believe)

I guess I missed your point. Are you suggesting that the bug adds needed "realism"?
If we want realism added in, we may need to re-program this entire website...
It is a great game, and many of us did buy it and have played since the 70's, yes, but it is merely a speculative simulation of these often gory battles. And, I would argue, if we are all playing under the assumption of a set of rules, then a "bug" or an outcome outside of the scope of this "set of rules" can not be a welcome event.
I would also argue vehemently that there is plenty of unpredictability already baked into both the simultaneous movement system AND the hit tables/dice rolls.
Actually you did get my point. Play the bug like a slice of realism and move on. I'm not saying "blood running from the scuppers" realism here, but i take these "unwelcome events" as fog of war and know that the programmers are most likely working on the problem. It is very cool that you have the board game, I'm envious.
