In France they start taking a second language early on and continue for many years. Here we take a couple semesters in high school and pat our selves on the back that we can say "hi, my name is..." in a second language. I grew up in a really small town. The migrant workers had as many kids in town as the townsfolk had in school. They all spoke fluent spanish and english. So in our school districts infinite wisdom we were allowed to take either german or french. It seems to me the policy makers are out of touch with reality sometimes. |
