Some 2-seaters COULD mount a radio, a huge heavy thing. IIRC just morse code. They had to leave home observer's guns to trade weight.
What they did was circling around over the objective, radioing instruction to artillery until it got it on target, then they gave "FFE" (Fire For Effect) and headed home.
Meanwhile, they were sitting ducks. |
