I think it's a great idea, one small issue though that seems to have slipped the collective mind:
WW1 planes didn't have radios so how do they transmit the location?

Not being a killjoy but something to consider.
Before we start running down these roads, what do people think of actually using all of the rules Phil wrote?
It isn't possible to fly as a novice against an ace - yet the original rules allowed for that. Can scenarios be written where one ace is up against two novices? Red Baron's final flight?
Just a thought.
