BM's an RPG. This is my motto. Well, that is, that is my city in my profile...

But why is it an RPG? Easy.
Blue Max does not have any well-defined victory criterion. So have to choose one, and play according to it. By deciding which is your victory criterion, you create a goal. By creating a goal, you are giving your pilot an ethics. This ethics defines your character.
That's all.
Now, some examples to make this clearer.
One of your opponents is gliding, and you think that your wingman, an inexperienced pilot on his first mission, is out of fuel. What are you going to do, chase down the enemy or protect you friend? Is it just his fault, being left without any fuel behind the enemy lines? And if you manage to kill the enemy, but your friend is shot down in the meanwhile, will you be happy? Are you playing the bloodthirsty pilot, or the helpful comrade?
After a short, bloody fight you are left on your Spad XIII, unable to make non-restricted manoeuvres, against a Fokker D.VII. Will you stay and fight to avenge your friends, or will you go back home to fight another day? Are you playing the dauntless greenhorn or the wise veteran of many battles?
After a long, unlucky fight, you and two of your wingmen, all flying Nieuport 17's, are left fighting three Albatros D.III. You are close to your own trenchline, and can make it safe back home, but this will leave your two allies in very bad waters (this is happening in one of my games right now). Will you abide by the code of chivalry and protect your wingmen on the way back, or will you land wishing them good luck?
In all of the above situations and in the infinite others you will encounter, what will you feel after making it back behind the trenchlines, when you look again in the eyes of your French girlfriend? Happiness, because you were not sure you would survive? Pride, for having downed le petit rouge? Grief, for your fallen comrades? Guilt, for not helping them when you could? Eagerness, for the next fight?
In Blue Max, all of this is up to you.
