Wishful thinking and I use to believe that, but even I have my breaking point. So even for me its hard to treat people nicely and with respect when they continue to sh!t on you. Some people... too many I think... are just naturally bad people. However, even if they followed the golden rule, then all would be better I think.
But still, I agree with what you say even though it just doesn't seem practical to me most of the time. After all, if they treat you like sh!t, then they are saying to you that's how they want to be treated themselves.
I guess this is the philosophical part of this topic within the forum.
