What is this Strategic Games Society? Are they open to new members? Do you have any contact infpormation?
Hi Mjolnir:
The Strategic Games Society was a drop-in gaming club that was an official club within the University of Colorado, Boulder. It had a budget, albeit very, very small, and access to University of Colorado classrooms for "meetings." The typical classroom was a ROTC classroom in the underbelly of the football stadium, Folsom Field, or in the Student Union Building, as those classrooms comprised of long tables with chairs.
The Strategic Games Society, or as we called it back then the "Games Club", met three times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, every week of the year. I spent many, many, many, long hours and days at the Games Club playing games. The thing I remember the most was the friendships and the laughter that resulted from the games.
I learned about the Games Club in 1977 when I was in high school in Boulder and was a regular participant at the Games Club until about 1985. The games that were played at the Games Club included just about any game you can imagine, Paydirt, Naval War, Cosmic Encounters, Titan, Rail Baron, D&D, Fight in the Skies, any and all SPI / AH / TSR games published, and even the grand daddy of them all, the SPI War in the West and the War in the East combined game. This group of four guys played that monstrosity over the Christmas break between semesters one year, spread out over two classrooms! If I remember correctly, the Germans won and the Japanese lost that game.
After 1985 I drifted away from the Games Club, but I maintained all of the friendships that arose out of the Games Club, several of whom are regulars here on YouPlay.it, including TheMayorofDac, Burner, Bolko, Syzygy, Spinal-Tap, etc. i.e., the members of the Troll Squadron.
To answer your question, I do not know if the Games Club is still in existence or if it has faded away into the sunset. Consequently, I do not have any contact information related to any official activity regarding the Games Club.
The members of the Troll Squadron are now spread out over North America, from Seattle to Washington, D.C., but we have on occasion all gotten together for game nights, most recently October 21, 2005. Fourteen guys in my basement playing Blue Max, Rail Baron, Robo Rally, and other games, drinking beer and eating pizza. Can't beat that! It is always good to get the old gang together!
As an acknowledgement to YouPlay.it, I for one am grateful for the opportunity to play Blue Max with my buddies and all of my new friends here on YouPlay.it, including Lawtygrr, DBurkeG, TnT, Wishgamer, etc. The list is long.
Got to go.
Later,
Troll
