| Message text Actually I had another Italian player contact me through e-mail to tell me he had spoken with Lillo personally and confirmed the cheating.
It was one of those things which supposedly start innocently-- Lillo was "helping kids he knew" play the game (sounds like spineless doesn't it?) and started making moves "for them" when they lost interest in the game. I thought Lillo had stopped playing, but then, we thought Spineless had stopped too and I have heard he came back. How recent are these games you mention?
Some of that situation was posted here and you would not be "rediscovering" the situation of those posts had not been deleted, but the hosts try to keep things peaceful and erase unhappy postings (this one might not stay up for long).
Yes, there are some fine pilots in this game, with an uncanny ability to outguess you-- even when you do something ridiculous (and yes, I've tried the same stunt myself).
But there have been a few that it was well established were making big scores by flying several planes in the same scenario. It seems every time someone starts a "what is the highest score in X scenario?" posting, someone comes along and starts doing extremely well. (The really amazing thing about some cheaters is that they brag about it-- but not directly.)
And I'm with you-- planes which repeatedly stall and get shot are a suspicious sign-- that the cheater is impatient! Yes, I know, we all supposedly "know the rules" and beginners might be slow learners, but put yourself in the mind of a beginner who is trying things out. "I'll try a stall and fool him," he thinks. BOOM, 11pts of damage. Yes, there may be slow learners, but the average person who gets burned like that may not stall again for many games, even in cases where it is completely safe to do so.
C&B, check those games you wonder about and look for "familiar names." Some regular play is not enough for "proof," since many of us play a lot of games and some of us make a point of trying to play with people we like (or against people we don't like!). But see if the repeated play leads to repeated results-- does this person play "a lot" with your "suspect" and always lose? Are there times when the "suspect" somehow manages to shoot this person 3 or 4 turns in a row (one of spineless' tip-offs)? Spineless made it easy for us by not only creating clones but in trying to "impress" others that he was beating real, veteran players...by naming the clones almost the same as people in the game. Some other cheater may not be so stupid or vain.
Yes, I think it's a very serious issue. And I think it does happen. And we cannot always avoid those people, because they may join games that you are already in. (We had a real rash of password or challenge games when the spineless stuff hit the fan.) It can put a real shadow on this game that we supposedly play to have fun. What you need to understand-- and if you are a long time policeman I know you must-- is that some people's idea of "fun" is pretty sick, really. Whether it's cheating with clones or beating your chest about how "brave" you are by taking super planes against pidgeons and being "outnumbered," the sickness is not all that different-- getting an unfair advantage and exploiting it. Unfortunately, there is a lot of that in the world and some of it comes into here.
Yes, avoid them when you can... and maybe say a small prayer for their redemption.
