Whatever the default setting is, a person who does not know how things works is likely to use it-- because he does not really know the difference.
So if the site makes "advanced" the default to save a step for the requent players, it will mean that more newcomers get confused and disappointed as soon as they start.
Which means that I would vote "no" on this.
Good point kduke, I thought of that but I thought too that it might be solved with a warning message in big CAPS to NEWBIES suggesting them to start with simplified rules and/or asking for help here in this forum where there are so many good players eager to help newcomers. I can remember when I did start I came here and received a good share of offers from people like Bramley Bomber, Troll, sven,...and my apologies for those not named above as an example. Sure I'm one of those open to try and help newcomers enter or at least approximate to the game's mechanics. I'm not good at all yet in regards of strategies but I know fairly well the way the game is played.
So to resume it in a statement: I'd put it as a default option with that BIG warning to newcomers. But of course nothing to get wrong in my words: I'm very happy with how things are working actually especially considering that you can feel the webmasters hands workind behind the scenes.
