I had the original version of both Ogre and GEV. Played both any number of times and eventually ended up selling both games on eBay a few years back. Wasn't the original publisher of Ogre et al called Microgames? Ogre was part of a series of "pocket" games, geared to low cost entertainment?
The games were Melee, Wizard, Ogre, Rivits, Deathtest and a few others. I enjoyed and played all of them extensively.
My favorite was Rivits. Can't tell you how many times I played that game. Myself and the other combatants created custom maps and rules for multi-player warfare. I still have my original copy of that game. Jackboppers Rule! Rocketboppers definitely had their role, though...

Steve Jackson worked for Metagaming Concepts when he designed Ogre and GEV, and they were published under the Microgame line (Ogre was Microgame #1). He was able to obtain the copyright for these games when he struck out on his own. Steve Jackson Games is mainly known for their Munchkin line nowadays, but they maintain a fan website for devotees of some of his older classics like Ogre/GEV, Melee, Car Wars, and Illuminati.
Rivets was published by Metagaming as Microgame #5, but was designed by Robert Taylor. It was apparently recently available from Decision Games here:
http://shop.decisiongames.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=rivets&Search.x=0&Search.y=0(The item description says both "In Stock" and "unavailable", so you'd have to contact them to find out which it is.)
Anyway, I played a number of these microgames in high school and college. They were quick to learn, cheap, and lots of fun. Brings back fond memories.
