On the value of the game. There are VERY few 1 against the horde games out there. This is the best that I am aware of. It is certainly the equal of most of the games on this site, and easily up to Blue Max. It is limited by being a purely 2 player game. I also believe that the Ogre has the advantage with newer, or lesser skilled players, and that the defense has the advantage with good experienced players. Steve Jackson disagreed with me on that, but the defense won all three of the games we played, and without crazy dice to cause this outcome. A fine game now, and a brilliant game when first designed.
Actually, the Ogre/GEV line has come a long way since its early days. Steve Jackson produced some official expansions to include a miniatures version, but the fan base has filled in the void with many interesting and increasingly complex scenarios.
The beauty of Ogre/GEV is that it works off a fairly simple set of rules but it allows for a great deal of flexibility. You can put on a relatively easy 1 Ogre vs an entire army game, a more challenging mixed force vs mixed force scenario, or even a highly complex multi-player extravaganza.
The main problem for the last ten years or so was that the basic components of the game were becoming hard to find making it difficult to recruit new blood into the game. Hopefully that will change with the new release of Ogre 6e and the re-start of miniatures production. |
