Agreed; never saw the SS DI in a WW I game till I played Blue Max - and we never ever used them in the board game version I played back in my college days. I think they were included simply as an equivalent to the N-17 for play balance purposes.
According to Wikipedia, only 95 were built and nearly all of them were simply used as trainers.
Historically, the Albatross DII would've been a more worth inclusion, as they were at their deployment peak in Jan. 1917. Given the DIII is available at that point though, it's probably not worth the bother.

Now if we were ever to open this game to earlier planes then the FE.2 or DH.1 are my absolute favourites. The former flew to the end of the war as an observation plane - and was the basis for some of the designs of my earliest model flying planes.
