According to Wikipedia about 80 DIII's saw active service altogether, mostly in just one squadron. They were quite popular - more so than the Fok DVII - as was it's successor the DIV, which were even fewer in number. Given they were deployed at squadron level strength, I think they justify inclusion.
As a comparison, the Snipe, though built in larger numbers, was only deployed in the final couple of months of the war and only saw active service in two squadrons.
From a strictly game balance perspective, I suspect the DIII/IVs were added to give the Snipe something more comparable to fight.
