I have tried a game with Aforisma. I think the French ship needs to be 8 hexes up wind hence it will be out the initial firing arc of the English ship. That way it has a bit of chance to charge down for the 1st turn and get closer.
Do we have a pair of ships with Turn rate of 2? That way they can slide up/down wind until they loose the first line of riggings.
The alternative is to bring the 2 ships closer so they have to engage each other right from the start. What about lowering the crew experience for one of the ship?
One of the issue (imo) here is these big ships can shoot well in long range while the frigates (the small ships 1-on-1) must close up to shoot properly. Neither of these ships can slide upwind. Once the riggings are shot out, it will be down to the game of dice which will take eternity to finish.
