how much hexagons do you think the French should be moved ?

More scenarios are better than fewer.

As for this one, I agree that the French needs more advantage - so either by starting further out (away from the Brit) or further up the wind.

For the French ship to have an advantage, she must be able to avoid rakes if she elects to go up and over the Brit.

If you need an exact hex count, I can get that for you.
