I like the campaign and appreciate the great effort. You have single handedly injected some life into the game and site - and you are to be commended.
That said, I have one minor small complaint and suggestion for future applications.
The campaign would have more game meaning, if players stuck with one side or the other, rather than playing both sides. Allowing players to fly both sides, predictably, makes the final result rather meaningless.
I can see this system of yours having some real "drama and bite", as the war draws to a close. It would certainly make the final result more interesting, as leading pilots emerge from both sides.
Perhaps players will purposely choose their preferred side as the war comes to an end, and the desired effect will be self-fulfilling. Alternatively, perhaps since it is still early, players might consider choosing one side or the other - from this point on.
If you agree Bluedragon, and if the players are inclined to agree to honor system play one side or the other, I think you will have a much more interesting final result.
Thus far I have flown just for the Germans and will do so for the duration. If others do the same, despite earlier results, it will start to become common knowledge who is flying on which side.
Again, I hope you don't mind my thoughts here. Thank you again, for your effort and unique ideas.

Although I think yours is a good idea, I would vote to keep the campaign as is. One of the great things about it is that it's so free form. For players that want to play a single side, go for it! See if you can tip the balance in favor of your side. For those that want squadrons, that would probably best be done informally too. Agree for your squadron members to only play one side and try to sign up to fight together as much as possible, but it will be difficult to do, I think. Passworded games improve the chances of flying as a squadron, but complicate things too.
I disagree that the final result will be meaningless. The meaning will depend on the context within which it is viewed. True, players playing both sides will tend to neutralize their overall effect on the campaign, but there is still the matter of the planes themselves. I think it will be interesting to see the swings in the campaign as new planes become available. For me, this is more a chance to track the lives of individual pilots than it is about which side "wins" the overall campaign. How long can you last? How many kills/points can you accumulate before fate catches up with you? Can you become your side's "great ace"?
So, yes, thanks to BlueDragon for the idea and the ability to manage it! It is a great idea, but part of what makes it so great is the freedom it gives the players to make it whatever they want. Come and go as your schedule allows, new players can join easily, no need to be "stuck" playing the same side unless you want to, no need to be part of a squadron unless you just want to. Keep it simple and keep it as it is. |
