I agree with this. The beauty of simply turning on a free-for-all checkbox is that it allows a completely new and different flavor of game with (I suspect) a relatively small modification to the code. Trying to make bigger changes is probably more likely to stall the whole idea. But, really, the person whose opinion matters on all of this is Nick, so we'll see what he thinks.
The option to select allies and switch allies in the game is a neat idea, but I'm sure it would be a code nightmare. Can you imagine having a radio-button (like medium and long bursts) for each player in the scenario to be marked "Ally" or "Enemy"?
Lots of backstabbing potential. You trick someone into being your ally but you have them toggled to enemy and shoot them down. Nice and Evil.
Anyhow, the biggest thing Blue Max needs is an active Scenario Manager. I know that I'm sitting on some scenarios that I sent off (and likely got hung up with the email issues) to both Scenario Managers with no response. I'll have to try again.
