By "free-for-all" I'm assuming you mean more than two different "teams" essentially? That's a great idea. What about a multi-squadron game?
Might be problematic in scoring, or for leagues. But I must admit, that's usually how I do multi-player games in RL using Canvas Eagles, or Wings of War...everyone flies solo, no matter what nation their plane is.
Granted, it's definately NOT historically accurate...it's just war gaming. *grin*
