Hi,

we were thinking about a little improvement in Blue Max.

What if we add a type of game:
- advanced rule,
- without Pilot killed, Explode and Observer killed chits ?

This will remove a big part of the lucky part of he game, leaving it more balanced.

What you think ?
Nick.

Nick:

I prefer that the Pilot Killed and Plane Explodes chits stay in the counter mix for Advanced games. Luck works both ways...

As for "experience" levels and/or pilot "special abilities," as in the campaign rules that came with the original game, seems to me that it would be hard to implement on a site-wide basis with any consistency. For example, let's say that I accrued enough points to gain a special ability. When would I lose that ability or gain new ones? Would I lose it the first time I am shot down? What if I never lost it? Then I could conceivably become a "super" pilot as I gain more special abilities without losing any.

Seems to me a more practical extension would be create a special offshoot Blue Max game area, similar to League play, wherein pilots, for example those pilots who qualify to create and/or join leagues, can join "special ability" games, flying against other like-minded, ambitious pilots who want to gain the special abilities sought. In the board game, once your pilot was shot down, your pilot had to start all over again with no special abilities. Same here. No second chances. The "special abilities" would only apply to "special ability" games.

Could create an interesting dynamic for League games, if special abilities were available for utilization and/or acquiring? For example, let's say that all eight pilots join a "special league," and each pilot has no special abilities going in. Pilots would lose any special abilities previously acquired upon being shot down, a virtual certainty in League Play, but they would get an ability back once they garner the requisite points to attain one in the first place. It is concievable that a pilot could gain and/or lose abilities at the same time due to multiple games in progress in league play. Could be an interesting dynamic. Would the newly garnered abilities apply in other currently pending games? Would the loss of an ability likewise result in the losing of that ability in other games? ("Dang, a second ago I knew how to shoot at an opponent from four hexes away, but now I can't seem to remember how to do that!").

Also, if I remember correctly, "newbie" pilots had to get to 50 points before they could tail. That might be something to think about here as well.

In other words, adding special abilities would be a lot of work. Something simpler might be to only allow special abilities to work in League Play, and that one special ability per pilot is available and exact special ability is assigned randomly or all pilots have the same special ability in each game individually. In one game I would have manuveur, in another "no deduction for firing with deflection," etc. My opponents would likewise have some other known/unknown special ability.

Just some random thoughts.
