I'm flattened, but I don't think that would be the best choice, for a number of reasons.
1. In the pas three years, I've been moderating and nowadays administrating a number of political forum (great need of moderation there, I'l tell you!). Although I have quite some experience on the matter of moderation, I simply don't have time and energy enough to take another charge.
2. I don't think I wolud be sufficently detached and neutral. Allow me to quote a post I've made from a game I'm playing:
Odio gli indifferenti. Credo che vivere voglia dire essere partigiani. Chi vive veramente non può non essere cittadino e partigiano. L’indifferenza è abulia, è parassitismo, è vigliaccheria, non è vita. Perciò odio gli indifferenti.
I hate indifferents. I believe that to live means to take a stand. Who really lives can't help being citizen and advocate. Indifference is aboulia, is parasitism, is cowardice, is not life. That's why I hate indifferents.
Antonio Gramsci D'ya get the point?
3. I'm not from the same town of webmasters. Although we're not very far away, there's the Appennini mountain range between us.
Apart from that, I don't see a great need about forum moderation, more about site moderation, and I think I already made my point on that issue.
About forum moderation, as far as I remember (and that is quite a long time) there have been just a couple of times before the nazi came in wich there have been rough waters in the forum. But nothing that couldn't be handled with a bit of common sense and good will.
It is also true that this community is growing rapidly, and inevitably, statistically, it leads to an increasing number of troublesome individuals. So maybe something has to be done about it before the issue grows too large to be handled.
Now, maybe some experience could be useful, so here's my 2c.
As webmastwers couldn't possibly handle all the possible situation, they need some help from the members. There are a number of ways to implement this, and I'm talking about ways I've esperienced.
1 - WMs name a number of users they trust as "watchers". They simply look at the forum and signal troublesome issues. WMs then act according to their undebatable judgement.
2 - Same as above, but those users have real moderator privileges, and can act, maybe after debating among themselves and WMs about the measures to be taken. I don't know if the forum and the site implements tools for this, like e.g. phpBB.
The first two hypothesis leave "power" (and responsability) in the hands of WMs. In the following there is a real self-ruling of the community. On a way, it's ideal, as the community takes care of itself, and I'll tell you, when it works it works very, very fine.
3 - Moderators are elected by the community itself, say twice a year. Indirect democracy. Great balance between democracy and efficency, but the weeks around "election time" are a hell of a turmoil!
4 - (Almost) ALL users have moderation privileges. In strong-bound communities works perfectly. Even people who takes part in a flame doesn't abuse of their power. You know, when everybody carries a gun, nobody uses it lightly. But I don't know if can be applied to YouPlay: the community maybe has already grown too much for this.
Final bit: the number of users due to help WMs should be no les than three, so they can cover 24/24 without too much workload. Maybe six would work better.
And that's all folks! |
