The half kill forces a disabled pilot to make a decision. Stay in the game and act as a decoy (and risk becoming a full kill) or cut you losses and leave (and award your opponent a half kill). The half kill will probably break alot of ties as well.
There should be some form of a kill awarded, whether it be full or half, because if not, leaving the board would rob the opponent of an opportunity to score a kill.

Leaving field early will be counted as 0.5 kill, so no need for this misbehaviour punishment, if they think its worth they will do so.

They sound pretty fair and should discourage "dishonourable" behaviour

I'm still not 100% happy about counting players who leave the field as half a kill.....because it lessens the value of a "proper" kill. But, on saying that, I can't think of another method of taking that into account
