Parker, I am still of the opinion that league stats are the least biased measure of how good your opponents are. I also feel that a better stat on the league stats page would be your average finish instead of the average league points.
Average finish would be a simple calculation that would tell you the strength of your opponents. It would be calculated by assigning 1 point for each 1st place finish, 2 points for each second and so on. Add all the points up and divide by the total number of leagues played and you will have a useful statistic. A perfect score would be 1.0 while the worst would be 8.0 and the true average would be 4.5.
I sampled a few players and made the calculation.
The top 5 league winners were all around 2.6 to 3.0 while I did calculate DBurke to be at an amazing 1.8. This number could even be used as a parameter for challenge leagues.
Opinins please!!
I just came to this but Mongoose has addressed my reservations here.
We only have very very rudimentary stats available to us and even today those are not being updated.
As you can see from looking at the leaders of these stats most of the players play 1vs1 games. Pointing this out is not to disparage those players but merely say that the stats are clearly being biased that way. I personally find 1vs1 games to be pointless under this rule system. In the air 1vs1 dogfights probably say a lot about a pilot but under this hex board game system it's a tedious game of flips IMO. Those players clearly find it enjoyable but it points out that many of us are playing very different games.
If such a system was to get off the ground then I would suggest a couple things. One is that stats need to be restored into working order on this side as well as being expanded to include many more categories.
Once that is in place then I would suggest starting from 'zero' and only use the numbers going forward for placement in a ranking system. Most of us who have been here for sometime recognize many players as good versus guys who just play for fun for the most part. And the some of us in that in-between zone. |
