Should work. If we had 12 players, that's 4 groups of 3
You could either rotate the groups so that everyone plays everyone, or,
promote the winner of each group plus 2 best losers to the next round (6 players). That would give you a semi-final of 2 groups of 3, promoting the winners and best loser to
a final 3...
