You have to decide the right answer for you.

One thing, I think you may find you have different answers when flying 1v1 vs flying with wing men.
As well, by "fly off" do you mean fly off the friendly board edge or any board edge?
For me, it is different if I have wingmen. I will stay much longer - even with no guns - to help (why stay with no guns? well, first, they may not notice (really), and secondly, if you can get the enemies tail, friends can tail you to get an idea where he may be going. However, I do strongly suggest you avoid head to heads if you have no guns )
When I am flying 1v1 - I like to treat my "pilot" historically. That means, if I am in REAL danger of being shot down - I will flee.
I think the answer really is - as long as you are consistent and honourable in your flying - you can retire and keep your dignity.
