Altought I share exactly your feeling towards WW1, I think that most of the pilots were somehow volunteers. Remember it was a different age, in which you were thought how good and nice was to die for your country... And life in the skies was sweeter then in the trenches
They fight cause they were in war, exactly as you and me would do now if our country would call in a ipotetic global conflict.
Mmmm, I do not feel that patriotic, so I suppose my most probable option in the unlikely event of some general draft would be trying to instantly teleport abroad. Actually the only historical situation I found worth of a fight was partisan war against the nazi occupation.
