As the one who began the 'beating a dead horse' thread, I must admit, when I said it, I thought there might be those who might not understand the phrase. You explained it very well, I think. But to be clear, I never meant it as an insult, or in a bad way.
It does however, remind me of a basketball coach who coached at our local university. He mentioned once, his wife had given him a plaque for his wall that said, "The horse is dead, get off!!" This coach was very well known for his temper and his ability to rant on and on, beating the dead horse into dust!
