The abolition of the STAT page sounds like a GREAT idea as it serves little purpose beyond pandering to ego.
He was just saying that to make his point. It sounds like a stupid idea to me. I have NO idea why you always get on this crusade abut people who enjoy honorable contests, and, even liking to win. What's WRONG with that? Nothing. That's the purpose of a contest. When it is the only focus, sure, fun COULD be avoided but that is up to the player, right? So, if a player derives enjoyment from beating the pants off of someone else, good for them, they are not WRONG. You may not agree that's a good use of time, but, you get enjoyment merely by playing, good for you. Maybe some people don't. That doesn't make them wrong.
You have a very very narrow mind. Why not allow ALL to enjoy the game, not just the limited number of folks with your opinion of things? You can always ignore stats, wins, whatever you like. The STATS were clearly put there for a reason, right? So, if they are there, they should be correct.
I don't think you are wrong either on your main point. I understand what you are saying, I think where you are wrong is trying to extend your view to everyone else by insulting them for deriving enjoyment for more reasons than you. You attack others who are in fact enjoying the game. Why? I thought you are trying to be a proponent of enjoyment? If so, you are failing badly.
What is the point of a tourney if not to win the most games? The annual tourney if not to win?
All sports, games, have winners and losers. No big deal. Its the way of life. I agree to focus on that to the extent that it removes enjoyment is not good but that's my opinion. But there is absolutely, positively nothing wrong with wanting to win and enjoying it when you do.
Sorry, but, the modern way of trying to force people to think in that manner does not agree with me at all. Some teachers are better than others, some players are better than others, etc. Some kids have higher grades than others. Good! It doesn't devalue anyone. It is what it is. A fact.
