When I posted my first message, I tried to make it as "middle of the road" as I could. Meaning I tried to show NO support for a particular position on the change of administrations in the USA yesterday. I was interested in what it would elicit as to comments. Judging from some of the 'sizzle' in a few of the responses I'd say I did a poor job at reflecting a middle position. I was looking to see if the responese from inside or outside the US would reflect different additudes. My Bad I do agree with one of the messages above that Politics is best left alone as a discussion topic. Enjoy your game time everyone - See you in the sky (I'm there most of the time). Bombadil
I will reply to a few comments, Bombadils first. You were truly neutral, we just refused to be.
Some have suggested that politics should be taken up on political sites. I have heard this before on other game sites. I always disagree, but usually go along with the ruling. The completely idiotic stuff I have seen posted on political sites by people I have zero interest in, connection to, or influence over, makes posting there pointless. I am connected to the people on this site because of our common interest in this site. It is probably a human flaw/genetic trait that I actually care what my fellow gamers think, and will spend some of my valuable time reading and posting to them. When the political "experts"(political leaders on the left and right) regularly attempt to get our backing based on affiliation alone, rather than any proven basis for their positions, or the fact that so very few economists saw the present economic disaster coming, how can communities not wish to discuss such issues amongst themselves when the experts offer so little?
The answer is painfully obvious. Even gamers don't wish to think much. Many people are afraid to get into a disagreement. If experts cant agree, how can you expect the partially informed(yourself or myself) to agree? That shouldn't stop the discussion.
There is also the problem of those people who open a topic and then cant help but be irritated/outraged by the contents. Outside of random porn or swearing/belittling/bullying, I just don't understand these easily irritated types who poke their noses in everywhere.
We should just stick to our games, quietly, and watch people vote for W a SECOND time, and then without any real world change during the 3 months following the 2004 election, watch W's approval rating drop thru the floor. Nothing had changed. After the election there just wasn't the constant rhetoric supporting the candidates, people took a step back, and reality started to seep in. A few discussion more on non political sites might have started a change before the economic collapse. Keep in mind that at the 2004 election exit polls 1/2 of Republicans thought that WMD's had been found in Iraq. This erroneous point of view could at least be supported by their wish that it was true to support their side of the argument. 1/4 of Democrats also believed that WMD's had been found. This 25% believed a falsehood that was counter to their own interests. I personally find this amazing. I would like to believe that a few discussions might minimize this sort of thing. The very lack of discussion amongst reasonable people leaves the discussion in the hands of the unreasonable.
As silly as politics can be (remember that politicians are folks not to different than us) Statistics on death and murder go back thousands of years, and we have it the best. This is the pinnacle so far, and socially we are going ever higher. Hopefully the world has not passed it's economic pinnacle. If it has, the next 100 years could be much rougher than the last 100 years, and the social progression will be down the toilet.
See you in the sky's, but maybe not in this topic Good gaming all. |
