As I pointed out - Antarctica is a continent not a country yet it has been added. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland compete in International competitions (Commonwealth Games) as independent nations but not here. At Siena they started running for the Palio much (read it as centuries) before could arise, in the British minds, the idea of playing a thing named 'Commonwealth Games', that is, by definition, a matter internal to the British Empire. This means that you can't define it an 'international matter'. Let's note the Palio, with its centuries of life, can be defined to be an internal competition of Republic of Siena, so we have to consider it equivalent to the C.Games. Then, to prove that your statement more than fault is dangerous, I will remember you that the "Six Nations of Rugby" is played between: England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy. If Northern was to be considered a "Nation" we would be talking about a "Seven Nations of Rugby". Then consider what would happen if you try to establish Northern Ireland as an independent nation: you would re-open the Northern Ireland problem. Do you wish that?
Adding these countries would be too much? What about these: Bouvet Island, British Indian Ocean Territory, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Faroe Islands, Guernsey, Heard & MacDonald Islands, Holy See (City Vatican State), Isle of Man, Jersey, Macau, Monaco, Montserrat (Did you ...), Norfolk island, Pitcairn Island, St Helena, US Minor Outlying Islands (...). Guernsey and Jersey are part ....
They can all legally claim to be said to be independent states, or equalized to that. Anyway, for your culture, I give you the list of the Contrade of Siena: the Eagle, the Caterpillar, the Snail, the Owlet, the Dragon, the Giraffe, the Porcupine, the Unicorn, the She-Wolf, the Shell, the Goose, the Wave, the Panther, the Forest, the Tortoise, the Tower, the Vale of the Ram. And then the 6 suspended the Cock, the Lion, the Bear, the Oak-tree, the Strong-sword, the Viper.
Without using an atlas how many of the above places can you honestly state you know where they are? Population? – as for some of them do they actually have a population?
Many, among my made things there is a Indian Ocean mapping for Flat Top.
Puerto Rico should be added as should England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Admitting Puerto Rico would force to add the flags of the 50 States of the United States of America, that has already been refused since it would lead to the request of the addition of the flags of the Contrade.
Rather than excepting places and people we should be accepting them to make this a truly global site and so what if you have to add a dozen recognised countries? Better that than not. Some things in life are important and a sense of belonging is important. I belong to this site, I would like to be accepted by it too. In Italian accepted is "accettato" that can be translated to be hit with a hatchet (accetta), so mind to tell to an Italian that you "want to be accepted" since he could do it! |
