This has come up before on the forum. Yes, you are correct! You haven't mis-interpreted the rules. Stability does play a role in maneuvering. Only "C" rated planes should go from left to right or right to left. A and B rated have to fly straight first before changing from a left bank to a right bank or from a right back to a left bank.
This has never been a part of the rules in 1st, 2nd or 3rd edition of the Blue Max Rules. It maybe somebody house rule of form a different game but never Blue Max
