Message text Too be clear:
If it ever sounds like I am defending hate, I have poorly conveyed my thought.
We should view youplay as A game covention. Anyone who "pays", gets in.
We play games together.
If someone starts using profanity, they should be told to stop. If they can't, they should be forced to leave.
If someone is is promoting hate, nazi or otherwise, they should be forced to leave.
I think the moderators have cautiously done their duty, and have done it well.
If you believe that you are playing with a bunch of model citizens, you are naïve. If we have 1000 active players, hundreds of them are either adulterers, wife beaters, tax cheaters, nazi's, communists, capitalists, Americans, or something else that would offend you if you knew it. Look at the arguments that have happened here concerning honor, in a computer moderated game, and how heated they got, to get an idea of how easy it is to upset people.
We who read and participate in the forum must learn that we don't know each other.
We must learn not to be upset by others.
Actions are what counts, especially here. I could be a model citizen, working hard, donating time and money to worthy causes. If I come to this forum and use obsenities, or promote hate, my real life is irrelevant, I should be told "change or leave". The opposite is also true. I could be scum of the earth. If I come here and behaive myself, who is to know or care.
TX, myself, or anyone else who wants to be part of an online community, has to be willing to ignore those they disagree with, or tell that person what they think, or wait for the moderators to jump in, but not let those we disagree with force ourselves out.
Once in a while I run across a political thread on a forum. You see the somewhat ignorant(most of us) arguing with the completely ignorant(the rest). I want to post, to at least correct the completely ignorant but what's the point? We, at least, have something in common on this site. We can hope to sway our opponents to our point of view. They can hope to sway us to thiers.
Here it is worth while to paricipate if it won't ruin your joy with the site. The best voices are often the first to leave, because they care, and want to be away from those that are mean. I want to influence them to stay.
If most of the reasonable posters left and the ranters remained, ranting would be the accepted norm. The reasonable keep, by their mass, the reasonableness of this site, as the norm.
I think I have been very reasonable with my opinions here.
There are a number of you who think I am full of #4%@.
Some think "Who gave DBurkeG the right to be the forum police". If you think that I have installed myself as the forum police, you are the completely ignorant. I am just a guy with an opinion that you are allowed to disagree with. The webmasters are the forum police, just to inform you. If you have a problem with them, HAH, HAH, tough luck.
The people who say "who gave you the right to be the forum police" are fools, no matter who they say it to. I will explane why they are fools. Their argument equals, "my opinion is that opinions should not be voiced". That is a contradictory statement. Foolish. All you can reasonably state is that my opinion is invalid because of your opinion (or facts if there are any).
If I am wrong in any of the above, I either mispoke, and will attempt clarification, or I was wrong, and I am willing to learn.
Just the other day I learned that I was mistaken. I was talking about the injustice of Bushes tax brake for the wealthiest Americans while my opponent defended the historically small deficit. I went to a few U.S.Government web sites and discovered... most Americans pay a lower percentage of their adjusted wages in taxes. I was wrong. America is running the natinal debt up, as compared to the gross domestic product, for the third president since WW2. Not Nixon during Viet Nam, Carter during inflation, or Clinton and that "crazy" liberal agenda. Reagan, Bush, and Bush are the only three. But I was wrong, we all received a 0-3% real tax cut, while our fiscal policy has helped the dollar drop 25% to the EURO in just 5 years.
It helps to know when you are wrong so that you can be right more often.
Here and most everywhere, we depend on the group.
Someone said...
Don't let the #@$%&'s get you down.
