Well, the Full Game Rules state: "Attacker's Speed 3 or 4: Add this value if the attacking plane performed a maneuver with a fuel/speed number of 3 or 4 during the movement step."
So "speed -2" stands for "fuel/speed", because a Bristol uses 3 fuel to fly 2. Fine, but how did I fire 7 times and never hit anything, not once? Was this just miserable luck or a bug?
Unfortunately, you have summarized the situation correctly. Although it is completely counter intuitive, the Blue Max rules (2nd Edition, the basis for those used on this site) include the rather ludicrous concept that the fuel value required for a maneuver also defines the speed of the maneuver.
The results you got were, sorry to say, neither miserable luck nor a bug. Rather, they were a predictable result of flying an aircraft with only one gun. With one gun you will have a negative modifier due to the single gun. At Range 2 (6 of your 7 shots were at that range), your aircraft was guaranteed only a +5 (Base 4 plus Stability). To be on the 1 Chart you could therefore only have one of the other two negative modifiers (Speed or Deflection). In each case you had both of these modifiers.
The lesson: To consistently hit something with a single-gun aircraft, you must usually either; 1) get to range 1, or 2) fly slow. |
