how many planes would cause you problems (and would your plane type make much difference)
As has been said, it depends on many factors. Models, damge taken, fuel left. Also: map width and position relative to friendly edge.
But the most important factor is pilots. WHo am I against? An old wolf? Play it safe and don't go for the kill if you can fall for a stall or a reserved. A rookie? He's as good as dead.
So, I'd play the lion against the herd. Feint, and try to separate someone fom the group. Probably he'll be the greenest. Go for it, but keep in mind the Baron: "Is the one you don't see that kills you", so always check six.
In my experience, anyway, you rarely have the chance to do more than one kill before others reach their map edge (unless there's a real dumb that runs on empty near your edge).
Ther's also a corollary of Murphy's Law: "When you're after a glider, the dice rolls always 1".
