I think i remember hearing about a single Snipe taking on 60 Folker D IIVs and downing 5 of them before crash landing on his own side of the lines. Can anyone confirm this and give more details?

I'm sure he did something great but 60 DIIV's seems a bit suspect to me. Were there ever 60 of them in the sky at the same time across the entire front? What would be the point of having 60 in the same area anyway?

Germany had 800 Fokker D.VIIs available at the front at the start of the last month of the war. So, the ability to assemble 60 or more would definitely have existed. Also at this time, knowing they were seriously outnumbered in the air, the German air force, instead of contesting all sectors of the front, concentrated their best units at a few points were they wanted to obtain local air superiority. Therefore, a large number of the latest fighters in the air together would not be inconsistent with German tactics and capabilities.

I do not mean to belittle William Barker's great accomplshment and bravery, but many aviation historians question some of the details of the battle. Most suspect is the 60 Fokkers figure. As German Jasta operated with 8-10 operational aircraft during that period of the war, even an entire Jagdgeschwader would have, at best, 40 machines in the air at one time. It is highly unlikely that 60 Fokker DVII's were operating in such a confined airspace required to fight a single aircraft. Much more likely, Barker fought against a Jasta worth of aircraft. Still a very brave thing and requiring equal skill to stay alive, much less shootdown several of your foes.
